Family Attacked by Dog While Protecting Infant
In Winter Garden, Florida, a family is expressing concern for their safety following a dog attack that left both parents injured as they tried to protect their four-month-old daughter. Katie Blacketor and Brian Thompson were bitten by a dog during an incident on October 9 in the Encore at Ovation neighborhood. Their daughter, although present in a stroller, was unharmed in the attack.
Details of the Dog Attack
According to Blacketor and Thompson, the attack occurred while they were walking to the neighborhood mailboxes with their infant daughter. The dog, described by the couple as a pit bull, charged at them from an alley while its owner was running behind it. Thompson reported being circled by the dog and bitten on the back of his thigh before the dog grabbed Blacketor's leg, dragging her to the ground. In an effort to protect her baby, Blacketor let go of the stroller so her daughter would not fall with her. Although video footage does not depict the attack, audio captures the family's distress during the incident.
Injuries and Aftermath
Blacketor shared images of her injuries and recounted needing nine stitches and using crutches due to the severity of the leg wound. The injuries have made it difficult for her to care for her infant. She explained her actions during the attack: “At least, you know, if he’s attached to me, then I know that she’s safe.”
Thompson questioned the response of authorities to previous incidents involving the same dog, stating, "It feels like the system as a whole has failed." Blacketor, while frustrated, recognized uncertainties regarding what further actions could have been taken previously.
History of Incidents Involving the Same Dog
Orange County Animal Services confirmed that their involvement with the dog, named Kobe, predates the recent attack. On June 7, a complaint was filed after Kobe, under someone else's control, attacked another leashed dog and caused injuries requiring veterinary care. The handler received a citation. Later in June, another incident was reported where Kobe, again off leash, lunged at a leashed dog, though no physical contact was reported and no citation was issued due to insufficient evidence.
On July 16, Kobe’s owner was officially warned about the dog being at large and showing aggressive behavior. The agency said limited written witness statements hampered further enforcement actions.
Current Status of the Dangerous Dog Investigation
Following the October 9 attack, Animal Services confiscated Kobe and launched a dangerous dog investigation. Kobe remains in county custody while the investigation continues. The dog owner has been issued three citations totaling $640 for failure to control an animal resulting in severe injury to a human, for an animal biting a human, and for permitting the animal to chase humans.
Animal Services indicated that even if Kobe is classified as a dangerous dog, under Florida law the owner may reclaim him by meeting certain requirements, and there is no obligation to notify previous victims if the dog is returned.
Neighborhood Reaction and Ongoing Concerns
The attack has raised concerns among neighbors, with reports indicating that community members have felt "terrorized" by the dog's presence for months. A resident shared a photograph appearing to show Kobe running toward two girls, which he claimed he intervened in.
Thompson voiced particular concern for children's safety in the neighborhood, especially with the approach of Halloween. Blacketor noted the support she has received from neighbors, though she remarked, “This isn’t what you want the neighborhood to come together over.”
Response from Animal Services
Orange County Animal Services emphasized responsible dog ownership and the importance of keeping dogs restrained, stating that "the incidents involving Kobe serve as an unfortunate reminder of how quickly situations can escalate when a dog is not properly restrained." The agency did not specify when a final decision will be made regarding Kobe's possible return to his owner.
