Vecna Returns in Terrifying Stranger Things Season 5 Teaser

Netflix has released an extended teaser for the highly anticipated fifth and final season of Stranger Things. The show is set to premiere late this year, and this latest trailer lives up to expectations. It’s got everything fans have been hoping to see ahead of the season finale, including a terrifying preview of the showdown between Hawkins’ crew of misfits and monsters from the Upside Down.

The minute-long trailer is chock-full of tension-building imagery, including shots of the Upside Down fully merging with Hawkins, groups of demo-dogs shuffling through a hallway, and quick flashes of explosions and one character wielding a flamethrower. But the moment audiences have been most excited about is probably the shot of Linda Hamilton striding into frame with a machine gun and an axe strapped to her back, fully prepared to storm the Upside Down alongside Hawkins’ favorite characters.

Season 4 ended on one hell of a cliffhanger, with Vecna tearing open a portal large enough for the Upside Down to spill into Hawkins in its entirety. The trailer gives a glimpse of what Season 5 will pick up with: the events take place during the fall of 1987, and time has progressed enough for it to land on the third anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance, which first kicked the entire first season into gear.

Fans will get eight total episodes to see their favorite characters one last time. But they won’t be your standard “episode” installments. Each will be feature-length, effectively giving viewers eight separate Stranger Things movies to devour.

Per the official synopsis, Hawkins has been changed forever by the Rifts being opened. All of our heroes—old and new—have one goal: find and kill Vecna. But with little idea of where he is or what he’s planning to do, it’s a near-Herculean task. Meanwhile, the U.S. government has implemented a military quarantine around Hawkins and upped the ante in its efforts to hunt down Eleven, which leaves her no choice but to go on the run once again.

Tension and dread are palpable as the approaching date of Will’s disappearance anniversary looms. The stakes are so clearly spelled out in the trailer, too: the final battle is here, but this time around, the forces Hawkins will be fighting are darker and deadlier than ever before. There’s no choice but for the full party—everybody we know and love—to band together one last time and throw everything they’ve got into the fray.

Returning Cast and Characters, Additions, and Glimpses of Heartbreak

The main cast will return for the last season, along with several other recurring characters, like Amybeth McNulty, who plays Vicki, and Gabriella Pizzolo, who plays Dustin’s girlfriend, Suzie. Jamie Campbell Bower is back as Vecna, whose Season 4 presence left many fans screaming in horror in the best way possible.

But there will also be several new characters, including Linda Hamilton, who will play Dr. Kay. Also joining the cast as new characters are Nell Fisher (as Holly Wheeler), Jake Connelly (as Derek Turnbow), and Alex Breaux (as Lt. Akers).

The trailer itself is peppered with several fun callbacks that will likely thrill fans. One of the most talked-about scenes already is a series of shots that show Lucas and others taking cover from a group of demo-dogs. Fans of Jurassic Park can’t help but notice the similarities to the movie’s iconic velociraptor kitchen scene.

But there’s one moment in the trailer that sends some chills down the spine, too. Vecna’s ominous, gravelly “found you” voice is a straight-up nightmare, and it leaves fans bracing for whatever’s to come.

Another more emotional moment fans can spot in the trailer is a shot of Eddie Munson’s gravestone defaced with the words “Burn in hell” scribbled on it in red paint. It’s a moment that fans know very well, as the Season 4 finale saw Eddie make the ultimate sacrifice to save his friends. Despite his heroism, the teenager is still painted as a villain in the eyes of much of Hawkins, a heartbreaking truth that the characters and the audience have to face. Arguably, Eddie’s death in the Season 4 finale was the most gut-wrenching loss since Bob Newby’s in Season 2. In a way, Eddie is the emotional center of this finale. The truth will (and must) come out, but the damage that this scene’s one image implies has already been done.

Netflix is also dropping a few other bombs. It will be releasing all eight episodes of Season 5 over three separate parts, a decision that is bound to frustrate fans who would have otherwise binged the entire season over a weekend. Volume 1 of the season will be released on November 26, 2025. Volume 2 will drop on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025. The grand finale will arrive on December 31, 2025—New Year’s Eve.

Breaking this final season up the way it is effectively means that the run-up to Hawkins’ final stand will take over the holiday season, ensuring that Stranger Things will be in the pop culture conversation for months.

The series’ fans know that Season 5 isn’t just the conclusion to a wildly popular Netflix series, but to a story that has spanned years, multiple generations of characters, and brought fans together for years of theories, memes, and endless fan debates. This trailer makes clear, too: there’s no ride after this one.

Which characters will make it out alive? Will it be everything our Hawkins crew does to fight back? Fans will have to wait until the season’s final episode on New Year’s Eve to find out, but if this trailer is any indication, the characters will do everything in their power to survive, to end this nightmare, for all of them, and finally, together.
