Orange County Unveils Ambitious Tourist Tax Plan

Orange County, Florida, is set to review an $800 million spending package that would allocate tourist tax revenue to 13 major projects across the region. The proposed plan, which is scheduled for discussion by the county commissioners on Monday, targets arts, cultural initiatives, sports venues, and heritage tourism.

Major Funding for Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts

The largest portion of the proposed tourist tax plan is earmarked for the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando. Although the center had initially requested $750 million, Mayor Jerry Demings is recommending $400 million in funding—accounting for nearly half of the total package. Supporters argue that expanding the theater and arts facilities will enhance the cultural offerings for residents and visitors alike.

Investments in Eatonville Heritage and Culture

The plan includes significant investments in the historic community of Eatonville. Two orange county projects on the recommended list would see $60 million allocated for developing a museum of culture and history at the Hungerford property, while $20 million would support the town’s heritage tourism district. These initiatives aim to boost heritage tourism in the area and spotlight Eatonville’s unique historic value.

University of Central Florida Stadium Expansion

The University of Central Florida stands to benefit from $46 million in funds dedicated to expanding its soccer stadium and adding a new track facility. UCF’s original request also included upgrades for broadcast infrastructure and a new softball stadium, but the recommendation focuses on the soccer and track components. The ucf stadium expansion aims to enhance university athletic facilities and broaden tourism appeal.

Additional Projects: Children’s Museum and Camping World Stadium

Other projects slated for funding under the tourist tax revenue proposal include a children’s museum in Winter Garden and construction of a parking garage for the Camping World Stadium. The plan also provides additional grants for arts funding and ecotourism initiatives throughout Orange County, fostering diverse experiences for both residents and visitors.

Commissioners to Decide Fate of Spending Plan

The $800 million tourist tax plan is not finalized. Orange County commissioners are scheduled to consider the proposal at a public meeting on Monday at 12:30 p.m. The plan's outcome will determine the future direction of significant orange county projects designed to boost tourism, cultural heritage, and community development. If approved, the proposed funding will be drawn from the county’s 6% tourist development tax collected from hotel and vacation rental stays, traditionally used to support tourism marketing, venues, and projects aimed at enhancing visitor experiences.
