Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Goes Genre-Bending

Paramount+ has just released the official trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The new season is set to premiere on July 17, 2025, on Paramount+, according to the trailer. Fans were only shown a teaser trailer for the third season back in April, and this is now the first extended look at the upcoming season.

The season 2 finale ended with the Enterprise crew suddenly attacked by several Gorn while the ship was on the planet’s surface of a Federation colony world that the Gorn had invaded. The crew who had accompanied Pike, Spock, and Number One to the planet’s surface were taken hostage by the Gorn, along with some other surviving members of the colony. Captain Pike, played by Anson Mount, was left with a choice to either obey Starfleet orders to stand down and retreat or disobey orders and attempt to rescue the hostages. Pike, of course, being Pike, did the latter, leading to the season finale cliffhanger.

The trailer picks up right where the season 2 finale left off with the Enterprise in the middle of a nail-biting, lightsaber-wielding space battle, one of the most iconic elements of the series so far. The trailer shows the Enterprise crew in the middle of the battle, and it looks like the third season of the series will finally bring an end to the Gorn story arc. The trailer also teases new challenges and threats the Enterprise crew will soon have to face.

Season 3 picks up immediately after the events of the second season finale, with Captain Pike still at the helm of the Enterprise. Although the Gorn will likely meet their match in the new season, they will also soon be pitted against a new villain who will challenge them like never before. The new antagonist is sure to test the Enterprise crew’s resolve, duty, and friendship. The season 3 trailer also teases that the show will feature different types of episodes, like those based on themes of faith, military missions, romance, comedy, and mystery. In an official statement, Paramount+ described the new episodes as “deviations from traditional Trek.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 also teases different types of episodes that are going to take place on the show. According to Paramount+, the third season will feature different genre shifts that have not been seen in any other Star Trek series. This is confirmed by the April trailer, which showed different types of episodes in the coming season, including battle-filled episodes and side stories with some light moments.

Cast, Crew, and Characters

The main and recurring cast members from seasons 1 and 2 will all be returning for the third season. Among the new characters on board in the third season is Cillian O’Sullivan, who will play Dr. Roger Korby, an original character from Star Trek: The Original Series, first played by Michael Strong. Dr. Korby, in the Strange New Worlds timeline, is a renowned archaeologist and medical archaeologist who had been missing for nearly three years until he was recently found. Nurse Chapel is also Korby’s long-time fiancé, which means the characters’ meeting now that they are both on the Enterprise will no doubt cause some professional and personal conflict, particularly because Chapel has found a love interest of her own in Spock (Ethan Peck).

The new season will also star guest appearances by comedians Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt. The trailer also teases more comedic side episodes, as seen in the April teaser trailer, as well as some action-packed episodes like the season 2 finale. It was mentioned earlier that the new trailer has a slightly lighter tone than the previous trailer, especially as it features some lighter moments of the Enterprise crew bonding, having romantic encounters, and even dealing with the messy results of one of their science experiments. The preview also has one of the most fascinating moments of the season, which has Kirk (Paul Wesley) in the captain’s chair, even if for a very short time. It remains to be seen what role Kirk will play in the new episodes, but the moment will no doubt be important in his career as a Starfleet captain. “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with,” Pike tells Kirk in that scene.

Premiere Date

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 will premiere on Thursday, July 17, 2025, on Paramount+. New episodes will be released weekly every Thursday through September 11, 2025.

The series was already renewed for a fourth season earlier this year, further cementing the growing popularity of the Star Trek series.
