Invasion Season 3 brings international heroes together to save humanity
You might not have seen it. For a variety of reasons. Chances are, when you first signed up for Apple TV+, you probably got the service to watch three other shows instead of Invasion. Silo, another Apple original, and the new foundation, Foundation, which has had some massive success on the platform so far this year, have dominated conversation.
For those who do, love it or hate it, it can feel like being in a minority of one. Season 1, in particular, had an unfortunate tendency to slog with its slow-burn pacing. Most fans of the show will admit to a love/hate relationship with the series, to be honest.
For those with the eyes to see, it’s been clear that the cinematography has been its greatest technical strength, and the creators have at least set out with the ambitious plan of being as audacious as possible in terms of big ideas and themes, even when the show hasn’t always hit the mark in its execution. Well, Apple has given the green light to the third season, and the trailer is here to answer the question that every show needs to address: Does it look like it will be worth it?
Invasion Was Created by David Weil and Simon Kinberg
Invasion was created by David Weil, best known for his work on the Amazon Original series Hunters, and Simon Kinberg, most famous for his work on the many X-Men movies over the past two decades and as producer and writer on The Martian (his work on that film earned him multiple Oscar nominations). The concept of the show has always been an interesting one: using the trope of an alien invasion told through the eyes of “regular” people spread out across the world. The show is partially filmed in English, Japanese, and Pashto, a choice which has allowed the large global canvas to maintain the tight focus of its human perspective.
Season 1 mostly chronicled the lead-up and early stages of the invasion. The aliens and the threat they posed have been an ever-present backdrop to the emotional and interpersonal drama that takes up the screen time of many of the characters, something that irked viewers who were expecting more of an action/horror alien invasion show. But that creative choice also set up the unique tone of the first season of Invasion: an intimate and personal sci-fi drama on a large canvas.
Season 1 built to a finale in which the full invasion could no longer be denied. Season 2 played out the immediate consequences of the events of the finale and took a different approach: more action and higher stakes. Season 2 gave the show some new life and brought the narrative energy that came with showing the characters’ arcs in a now fully transformed world. Humanity had been essentially corralled into small safe zones, and survival of the fittest (literally) became the only game in town. The pacing didn’t pick up, but there was more forward momentum as the writers set the stage for a third-season dramatic sea change.
Season 3 of Invasion: Characters Will Unite For Mothership Mission
The upcoming season picks up two years after the events of the previous season, and the threat has evolved in new and terrifying ways. According to the official description, the perspectives that have so far been kept separate will now come into contact with each other for the first time. The three main characters, who were living on three different continents in the previous seasons, will all end up being brought together on a high-stakes mission to infiltrate the alien mothership. The characters of Invasion coming together marks a major shift for the show, which, until now, has focused on separated storylines and looser connections between them.
The aliens have also evolved, or rather, mutated into what’s described as their “apex” form, and their long tendrils seem to be spreading like wildfire across the globe. The stage is set: in order to have any chance of keeping the human race alive, it will take all of the combined skills, knowledge, and hardiness of the characters who have survived thus far. New alliances will be formed between our heroes and antiheroes, while old bonds will be tested as new missions are established.
The returning cast includes Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the much-maligned tech entrepreneur Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. Erika Alexander will join the show as a series regular in the new season.
Season 3 of Invasion Has a Lot to Build On
From a narrative perspective, the show is in a unique position in Season 3 to both wrap up existing character arcs and deliver on the promise of large-scale action and alien combat that the show hasn’t yet shown but which viewers have been waiting to see since the beginning. It has the opportunity to balance the emotional depth of its character-driven storytelling with the type of big-budget spectacle that’s expected in an alien invasion story.
The question now is whether the show can convert new viewers or those who left the show after the first season or two. The trailer certainly gives off the impression that it might be ready to do so, combining its emotional core with the new high-concept action elements, ratcheted-up stakes, and sense of forward momentum needed to put a show into must-watch TV territory.
Invasion season 3 is set to debut on August 22, 2025, on Apple TV+. Whether you’re a long-time viewer of the series or one of the potentially large numbers of latecomers to the show, Invasion seems poised to finally deliver the thriller and emotional ride that it has been building toward since the very first episode.
