UK Prime Minister Pushes for Renewed Relationship with EU
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has called for closer ties between the United Kingdom and the European Union, citing Russia’s “campaign of hybrid attacks” as evidence of the need for stronger political cooperation in Europe. Speaking on Monday, Burnham told lawmakers that the current state of UK-EU relations is insufficient, and that the evolving security environment makes collaboration more important than ever.
Russian Interference Highlighted as Motivation
Burnham argued that attempts by Russia to meddle in European democracies, including efforts to interfere in votes and destabilize political systems, demonstrate the vulnerabilities created by the distance between the UK and its European neighbors since Brexit. He specifically referenced Moscow’s activities as a reason to strengthen ties with the 27-nation bloc that the UK officially left in 2020 after the Brexit referendum.
In the House of Commons, Burnham stated it would be “a dereliction of duty” not to pursue a closer working relationship with the European Union, especially in light of the challenges posed by Russian interference.
Summit Announced to Discuss Trade, Security, and Cooperation
The UK and EU confirmed on Monday that a summit will be held in Brussels on November 20, intended as a step toward reinforcing political and economic links. Burnham indicated that the talks will cover a range of crucial topics, including a trade deal for food and drink, agreements on energy and emissions trading, the launch of a new youth experience scheme, and deeper cooperation on immigration policies.
Looking beyond the summit, Burnham suggested that Britain and the EU should begin “a serious dialogue about the different options for our relationship in the long-term,” emphasizing the importance of addressing issues such as economic growth, immigration control, values, and UK security.
A Shift in Approach to Brexit
Burnham’s statements mark a break from the policies of both past Labour and Conservative governments, which had avoided reigniting the contentious debate over Brexit. He noted at the Labour Party’s annual conference last month that “Brexit has done more harm than good,” suggesting the current trade agreements are restricting the UK’s potential. Burnham has pledged to seek political consensus for a new UK-EU relationship, including future possibilities such as rejoining the bloc, although he remains tied to his predecessor Keir Starmer’s promise not to re-enter the EU’s single market or customs union for now.
The planned summit was originally scheduled for July but was delayed due to disagreements over the EU’s “made in Europe” regulations, which the UK claims disadvantage its producers. EU leaders have welcomed the UK’s recent warmer tone, yet remain cautious, wary of London seeking privileges reserved for full EU members.
Russian Attempts at Influence and Domestic Response
Warnings from UK intelligence and lawmakers about ongoing Russian interference have resurfaced in national discussion. Burnham, in a podcast interview, disclosed that his advisers confirmed Moscow had tried to affect the result of the 2016 Brexit referendum — though a government spokesperson, Tom Wells, later clarified these attempts were unsuccessful and the vote outcome remains legitimate.
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch pressed Burnham for specific evidence of Russian influence. Burnham responded that it is public record Russian entities sought to interfere in the 2019 UK general election, making earlier attempts plausible. Russia has consistently denied any meddling, and Nigel Farage of Reform UK, a prominent Brexit supporter, dismissed Burnham’s claims as “outrageous.”
Looking Ahead: UK-EU Summit and Political Cooperation
As Britain prepares for the November 20 summit in Brussels, Burnham’s government sees it as a critical opportunity for charting a new course in UK-EU relations. Key issues on the agenda are expected to include trade reform, energy collaboration, youth schemes, and coordinated approaches to immigration and security amidst ongoing concerns about hybrid attacks and foreign interference.
